2:9. “…say they are Jews and are not…”

“…It [the age of the Jewish nation] ended in catastrophe, but the nation left two successors, the Christian Church and the Rabbinical Schools, each of which carried on some of the old national aims.  And of the two it was the Christian Church that was most faithful to the ideas enshrined in the Apocalypses, and it did consider itself, not without some reason, the fulfillment of those ideas.”  (p. vii.)

“…the Apocalyptists…normally…embrace the Gentiles equally with the men of their own nation in the divine scheme of salvation; and, in the same way, the wicked who are excluded are not restricted to the Gentiles, but the Jews equally with them shall suffer torment hereafter according to their deserts.” (pp. xii, xiii.)

2:17. “A new name…which no man knoweth…”

Enoch LXIX.14: “This angel requested Michael to show him the hidden name, that he might enunciate it in the oath, so that those might quake before that name and oath who revealed all that was in secret to the children of men.”  (p. 90).  The text goes on to show the power of the oath in the creation of the heaven, earth, and all that is in them.  (See also 19:12, ‘Name’.)
