Referents from Apocrypha for Chapter 22

22:2. “…was there the Tree of Life….

2 Esdras 2:12: “The tree of life shall give them fragrant perfume, and they shall neither toil nor become weary.”

 

2 Esdras 2:18: “…I have consecrated and prepared for you twelve trees loaded with various fruits…”

 

2 Esdras 7:53[123]: “(What good is it….)…that a paradise shall be revealed, whose fruit remains unspoiled and in which are abundance and healing, but we shall not enter it…”

 

22:4. “And they shall see His face….”  Reminiscent of Daniel 12:3 is 2 Esdras 7:91, 98:

2 Esdras 7:91: “First of all, they shall see with great joy the glory of him who receives them, for they shall have rest in seven orders.”  [7:98]:  “.. for they hasten to behold the face of him whom they have served in life….”

 

22:5. “…for the Lord God giveth them light…”

2 Esdras 7:97-8: “The sixth order, when it is shown to them how their face is to shine like the sun, and how they are to be made like the light of the stars, being incorruptible from then on.  The seventh order, which is greater than all that have been mentioned, because they shall rejoice with boldness, and shall be confident without confusion, and shall be glad without fear, for they hasten to behold the face of him whom they served in life and from whom they are to receive their reward when glorified.”  See also 2 Esdras 2:35-36, above at 21:23.

 

2 Esdras 7:55[125]: “(What good is it…)…that the faces of those who practiced self-control shall shine more than the stars, but our faces shall be blacker than darkness?”

 

Baruch 5:9: “For God will lead Israel with joy, in the light of his glory, with the mercy and righteousness that come from him.”

 

22:6. “…These sayings are faithful and true….”

2 Esdras 15:1: “The Lord says, ‘Behold, speak in the ears of my people the words of the prophecy which I will put in your mouth, and cause them to be written on paper; for they are trustworthy and true….”

 

22:11. “…he that is unjust, let him be unjust still: … and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still.”

2 Esdras 7:45[115]: “Therefore no one will then be able to have mercy on him who has been condemned in the judgment, or to harm him who is victorious.”
