19:2. “…He hath judged the great whore,…and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.”

2 Esdras 15:7-9: “Therefore says the Lord, ‘I will be silent no longer concerning their ungodly deeds which they impiously commit, neither will I tolerate their wicked practices.  Behold, innocent and righteous blood cries out continually, I will surely avenge them,’ says the Lord, ‘and will receive to myself all the innocent blood from among them.'”  See also 6:10 above.

19:6. “…as the voice of many waters….” see 1:15.

 

19:8. “…fine linen, clean and white….”

Baruch 5:1: “Take off the garment of your sorrow and affliction, O Jerusalem, and put on for ever the beauty of the glory of God, Put on the robe of the righteousness from God; put on your head the diadem of the glory of the Everlasting.”

 

19:11. “…a white horse; and he that sat on him was called Faithful and True….”

2 Maccabees 3:25: “For there appeared to them a magnificently caparisoned horse, with a rider of frightening mien, and it rushed furiously at Heliodorus and struck at him with its front hoofs.  Its rider was seen to have armor and weapons of gold.”

 

2 Maccabees 5:2-4: “[When Jerusalem was being invaded] And it happened that over all the city, for almost forty days, there appeared golden-clad horsemen charging through the air, in companies fully armed with lances and drawn swords–troops of horsemen drawn up, attacks and counterattacks made on this side and on that, brandishing of shields, massing of spears, hurling of missiles, the flash of golden trappings, and armor of all sorts.  Therefore all men prayed that the apparition might prove to have been a good omen.”

 

2 Maccabees 11:8: “And there, while they were still near Jerusalem, a horseman appeared at their head, clothed in white and brandishing weapons of gold….  10. They advanced in battle order, having their heavenly ally, for the Lord had mercy on them.”

 

19:12. “…a name written that no man knew” see 2:17 above.

 

19:14. “…armies which were in heaven….”  See 3 Macc. 2.21-24; 6:18 for a similar account.

4 Maccabees 4:10: “And while Apollonius was going up with his armed forced to seize the money, [of the temple], angels on horseback with lightning flashing from their weapons appeared from heaven, instilling in them great fear and trembling.”

 

19:15-21. “…out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword…”

2 Esdras 13:8-11: “After this I looked, and behold, all who had gathered together against him, to wage war with him, were much afraid, yet dared to fight.  And behold, when he saw the onrush of the approaching multitude, he neither lifted his hand nor held a spear or any weapon of war; but I saw only how he sent forth from his mouth as it were a stream of fire, and from his lips a flaming breath, and from his tongue he shot forth a storm of sparks.  All these were mingled together, the stream of fire and the flaming breath and the great storm, and fell on the onrushing multitude which was prepared to fight, and burned them all up, so that suddenly nothing was seen of the innumerable multitude but only the dust of ashes and the smell of smoke.  When I saw it I was amazed….”

 

2 Esdras 13:25-32: “This is the interpretation of the vision: As for your seeing a man come up from the heart of the sea, this is he whom the Most High has been keeping for many ages, who will himself deliver his creation; and he will direct those who are left.  And as for your seeing wind and fire and a storm coming out of his mouth, and as for his not holding a spear or weapon of war, yet destroying the onrushing multitude which came to conquer him, this is the interpretation: Behold, the days are coming when the Most High will deliver those who are on the earth.  And bewilderment of mind shall come over those who dwell on the earth.  And they shall plan to make war against one another, city against city, place against place, people against people, and kingdom against kingdom.  And when these things come to pass and the signs occur which I showed you before, then my Son will be revealed, whom you saw as a man coming up from the sea….”  (See also 7:9 and 14:1 above for further quotation from this passage.)
