Verse 2:17 A Hidden Manna

Hidden Manna

Revelation 2:17:  “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth [it].”

When Ezra returned to Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity, he excluded from the priesthood as unclean, those who could not be found enrolled in the genealogies.  These were not to partake of the holy food “until a priest with Urim and Thummim should arise.” (Ezra 2:63 and Nehemiah 7:65).

The original Ark of the Covenant had contained a pot of manna.  The “hidden manna” may be a reference to the fact that there were five things missing from the second Temple: 1. Fire from on high; 2. anointing oil; 3. the Ark; 4. The Holy Spirit; 5. Urim and Thummim.

This promise in Revelation 2:17 is to those who have qualified for the priesthood by the righteousness of Christ.  Christ is the Priest with Urim and Thummim.  He is qualified to designate those who can eat of the holy food, the “hidden manna.”  Christ has restored the Ark of the Covenant.
