Word Studies Chapter 18

18:7. ‘Bereaved’

Greek #2049 ĕrēmôō, from #3443 mŏnŏō, ‘desolate’.  Bullinger gives mŏnŏō as ‘to be left alone as a widow, to be solitary, i.e. childless’.

Hebrew #7908 shekôwl corresponds to ĕrēmôō in meaning.  It is used as ‘to be bereaved of children’ ‘childless’ ‘to bereave…used of wild beasts devouring children’, Lev. 26:22; Ezek. 5:17; 14:15.  See Hosea 9:12.  Also used ‘of a sword as consuming the youths’, Deut. 32:25; Lam. 1:20; Jer. 15:7; Ezek. 36:13-15.  Also a form of the word means ‘to miscarry, cause to abort, or suffer it, hence to be sterile.”  See also ‘desolate’ at 17:16.
