Word Studies Chapter 14

14:1. ‘Written’

Greek #1125 graphō, ‘written’, ‘described’.  These were marked with a ‘written’ Name in their foreheads in contrast to those who took the ‘mark’ of the beast.  See Gal. 6:17 for stigma, ‘a mark burnt in’, ‘a brand’, especially of ‘a runaway slave or prisoner.’  (Graphō, ‘written’ Revelation 17:5; 19:12, 16.)

See Ezek. 9:4-6 for Hebrew #08420, tâv, ‘a mark’; by implication ‘a signature.’  Contrast “Mark of Beast13:16-17 above and Revelation 14:9-11; 15:2; 16:2; 19:20; 20:4.

14:8. Babylon

Greek #897 Babulōn, of Hebrew origin, ‘the capital of the Chaldees’.

Hebrew #894 bâbel from #1101; ‘confusion’, ‘Babel, i. e., Babylon’, #1101 bâlal ‘to overflow’, ‘to mix’.

At the time of the writing of the Book of Revelation, the Jews who had remained in Babylon had become very strong economically, politically and religiously.  However, they were racially mixed more so than those who had returned to Palestine.  It was easy to call them ‘Babylon’, ‘mixed.’

The fact that Daniel had foreseen that the end of Jerusalem would be “with a flood,” (9:26; 11:29), indicates that the sins of Babylon’s, ‘overflow’, had drowned them in the wrath of God.

14:10. ‘Cup’ or ‘Bowl

Greek #4221 pŏtĕriŏn, ‘a drinking vessel’; by extension ‘the contents thereof’, figuratively, ‘a lot or fate’.

Hebrew #3563 kôwç.  BDB: ‘cup of judgment of Yahweh from which the nations, or Israel, must drink’.  A synonym is Hebrew #02534, chêmâh, ‘the cup of God’s wrath’, ‘the cup of poison’.

14:15. ‘Hour’

Greek #5610 hōra, ‘an hour’, literally or figuratively; translated also ‘day,’ ‘hour,’ ‘instant,’ ‘season,’ ‘[high] time.’

Hebrew #8160 shâ‛âh translated ‘hour’ in Daniel 3:6, 15; 4:19, 33; 5:5.
