Chapter 4

3:3. ‘Remember’

Greek #3421 mnēmŏnĕnō ‘make mention’, ‘be mindful’, ‘remember’.

Hebrew #2146 zikrôwn ‘remembrance’ from #2142 zâkar, ‘to mark, so as to be recognized’,

BDB gives zakar, verb, as remember…II.4…record… In a negative sense it is: II.2. be not ‘remembered’.  To be blotted out of the book of life means ‘to no longer exist’, said of the name of Israel as a nation, Jer. 11:19 and Psalms 83:4.

BDB gives the noun, masculine or adjective form as zakar, ‘of men’, ‘collectively of male persons,’ especially in connection with those registered through circumcision.

3:5. ‘Book of Life

Greek #976 biblŏs, ‘a sheet, scroll, book’.

Hebrew #08435, tôwledâh ‘generation’ Perhaps with reference to the family genealogies: Num. 1:2, 3, 17-46, and #01755, dôr, ‘age’ or ‘generation’.

3:7. ‘Door’

Greek #2374 thura ‘a portal or entrance’ (the opening or the closure), ‘gate’.

Hebrew #1817 deleth, ‘door’ spelled backwards and forwards sounds like the word ‘Philadelphia.’  Perhaps suggesting the two-leaved door.  ‘Door’ also translated ‘gate.’

For ‘Philadelphia’, BDB gives the word rabba, meaning “a great or populous city. 1. the capital of the Ammonites…in the Greek period called Philadelphia…modern Amman, 2. a city in Judah,…site unknown.”

3:12. ‘Pillar’

Greek #4769 stulŏs ‘a post, support’, ‘pillar’.

Hebrew #5982 ‛ammûd ‘a stand, platform’.  (Verb) ‘to prop’, ‘to support’, ‘to found, to build up’, ‘to be firm, unshaken’, metaphorically, ‘to be faithful’.
