13:1-18

13:1. And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

                And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads:

13:2. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

                And the beast that I saw was like a leopard, its feet were like a bear’s, and its mouth was like a lion’s mouth: (See “Breath/Mouth of Image” 13:5.)

                And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority:  Revelation 16:10.

 

13:3. And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

                One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth followed the beast with wonder:

13:4. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who [is] like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

                Men worshiped the dragon: For he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast saying:  “Who is like the beast and who can fight against it/(him)?”:

 

13:5. And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty [and] two months.

                And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words:

 Revelation 13:2, 6, 15.        

                And it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months;

13:6. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

                It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling:

                That is, those who dwell in heaven:  (Note: “His dwelling” is “those who dwell in heaven.”

13:7. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

                Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them: (Note: This phrase is not in some of the ancient manuscripts.)

13:12. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

                It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence,

Revelation 13:2-4 (=i.e. authority of the dragon).

                And makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, Whose mortal wound was healed:

  Revelation 13:3, 14; 17:8.

 

13:13. And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

                It works great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in the sight of men:

13:14. And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by [the means of] those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

                And by the signs which it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast: (WS 13:14 ‘Sign’).

13:15. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

                And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast so that the image of the beast should even speak

                And to cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain:

13:16. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

13:17. And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

                So that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name:  (WS 13:17 ‘Mark’).

 In the New Testament it may be referred to in:

Revelation 13:16-17 seq.: “Mark” = charagma, something graven or sculptured, a mark cut in.  In Acts 17:29 KJV translates the word “graven”.

13:18. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number [is] Six hundred threescore [and] six.

                Let him who has understanding reckon the number of the beast:

Revelation 15:2.   

                For it is a human number, (WS 13:18 ‘Man/Human’).
